How important was art education in your creative development?
Extremely important. We were (and still are) doodlers but art class, and more importantly the teachers in those classes, showed us ways to give those doodles a purpose.
Who was your favorite art instructor?
Art school seems like ages ago and we had great teachers. But, the four us can attest to having the fortune of working with great mentors in the beginning of our careers. It’s a topic we’ve spoken about and how important they were in molding us as creatives. We’d name them but they already know who they are.
Is there a specific project, medium or memory
In junior high, one assignment was to find a piece of black and white art that we found inspiring and recreate it freehand on paper with pencil. No matter your drawing skilll level, it allowed you to get intimate with the piece and experience nuances that the artist or designer may have experienced that words can’t describe. It dug deep into that subjective realm of what we may find appealing and created a relationship between the eyes, hand, and canvas. It’s still an exercise we occasionally do today.
Do you feel that art education helped you grow as a person beyond your creative development?
In art class our teachers taught us how to look at the world differently and beyond the things right in front of us. That way of seeing and developing a point of view definitely stemmed from those classes and teachers.
What inspired you to choose art as a career?
We knew we wouldn’t be happy doing anything else. Although, we’re really good at eating chicken wings and ramen!
What do you like about 1” buttons?
It’s punk rock. If you haven’t participated in a 9 hour button making session you’re missing out on life. It’s a rite of passage as a creative.
Do you remember your first 1” button?
I actually still have it. It’s a vintage button from The Cure’s Pornography tour given to me by my older brother. Seeing that button, the songs from that era instantly start playing in my head…. – Jason Wong
Describe a button that would spark a conversation with a complete stranger?
Buttons can say so much without making a sound. Whether it’s a single word that has a thousand interpretations or a band name, it’s that bond between strangers that lets them know they are part of the same club.
